Assignment and goals

Assignment
Outdated hardware for the SAP systems in the Thieme Medical Publishing Group needed replacing. The ensuing decision process led to a fundamental realignment of the SAP landscape. As far as possible, the SAP applications were to run on the new hardware in a virtualized infrastructure.
Due to the significance of the SAP systems to the smooth running of the company, the internal project team was to be supported by a partner with comprehensive experience in similar projects. Based on the good working relationship established during previous projects and convincing references from SAP virtualization projects, the management chose to work with the Virtualization Competence Center for SAP.

Project goals
The primary objective of the investment was to improve IT performance and reliability. Particular attention was paid in the process to the Solution Manager, which is used by all subsidiaries worldwide and is to be high-availability in the future. A new LUN design was to ensure good system performance in the long term. Furthermore, the new infrastructure was intended to reduce IT operating costs, in particular with respect to space requirements and energy consumption.

Solutions

Planning and setup of the virtual infrastructure and the LUN
Planning and setup of the virtual infrastructure and the LUN In preparation for the transfer of the physical systems, the VCC consultants planned the virtual infrastructure and setup of the storage LUN design. The setup of the vSphere infrastructure meant that the foundation had been laid for the transfer of the physical SAP systems.

Virtualization of the SAP systems
In collaboration with the VCC, the next step was to successfully migrate the physical SAP development systems to VMware vSphere. The Thieme Medical Publishing Group uses the SAP Solution Manager for company-wide Ticket Troubleshooting Management. This productive SAP application was migrated to a high-availability solution conceived with vSphere. As a result, Thieme is now one of the first VMware clients worldwide to entrust mission-critical applications to VMware vSphere. In the process, the VCC also closely analyzed the connected components and interfaces and, together with the client, worked on the transfer to a virtual world.

Targeted expansion of know-how
The Group's SAP team took part in the AD310 workshop "VMware vSphere 4: Install, Configure & Manage for SAP System Administration" in preparation for the project and the stable administration of the SAP applications in conformity with the system.

Review and outlook

The procedure followed during this project has proved successful. Professional SAP downtime planning ensured that the transformation proceeded unnoticed by the users.
Since migration, the virtualized systems have all been running reliably in the new environment. Performance in comparison to the physical systems has noticeably improved. The high-availability concept has been successfully implemented and tested by the VCC consultants, in accordance with the client's specifications. Alongside the important productive SAP Solution Manager, the SAP development systems have also been designed for high availability. A detailed analysis of savings on energy expenditure has yet to be performed. Following consolidation of the infrastructure from five physical servers to one, Thieme is expecting to reach its projected savings potential here, too.

The experience gained so far by the Group with virtualized systems is likely to lead to the virtualization of further SAP systems in the course of this year.

Customer assessment

Ralf Butterman, head of the IT Division of the Thieme Medical Publishing Group, sums up his experiences like this: "This is the way IT projects should run. Everything proceeded according to schedule, and the migration of our physical servers to the virtual infrastructure went very smoothly. As far as reliability and cost savings are concerned, we have achieved our projected targets.
We are very satisfied with VCC services. The consultants work extremely professionally. Their concepts are characterized by high quality and reflect the wide-ranging experience of the VCC consultants in the field of virtualization. The decision to take part in the AD310 seminar "VMware vSphere 4: Install, Configure & Manage for SAP System Administration" also paid off. This workshop was the ideal preparation for migration and operation of our SAP systems in the new landscape."

Assignment and goals
Assignment:
AstraZeneca wanted to exchange its ageing SAP hardware with a server landscape. AddOn was given the assignment to analyze and evaluate the possibilities and potential that the virtualization of its IT-infrastructure could offer.
Project goals: The ultimate goal was to improve the IT performance. Additionally, the new infrastructure was to ensure a high operational availability of the SAP systems. Furthermore, the new IT landscape had to guarantee the compliance requirements placed on the IT of a pharmaceutical organization.

Solutions
During the "Consulting in a Box - SAP Virtualization Check" package, the AddOn consultants analyzed the current IT-infrastructure, evaluated the consolidation potential and calculated the financial consequences of a virtualization. Based on the results of the analysis, AddOn designed and implemented the virtual SAP infrastructure. The new SAP system landscape makes efficient administration of the consolidated SAP development systems, test systems and productive systems possible. Additionally, it ensures a high operational availability of SAP applications.

Customer assessment
Askin Karatepe, server and database administrator, AstraZeneca:
"The AddOn consultants have given us tremendous advice on implementing the virtual infrastructure. The consultants have made it possible that we can take advantage of and use the potential of the VMware infrastructure. The concept they developed allows us a 24/7 operational availability of our SAP-systems. The virtual machine templates simplify documentation and reduces server setup time.
The allocation of the physical resources to the virtual machines is a substantial achievement. We are convinced that our productive system runs just as well on a virtual machine as it would in a physical environment - perhaps even better.
I recommend the AddOn SAP Virtualization Check to all organizations with a large number of servers. It gave us the necessary security for our plans. It also provided us with a feasibility study.
Co-operation with the AddOn consultants was very good. Especially the efficient, transparent and very pragmatic way in which project work was done. Another plus was the direct and open communication. I was always up-to-date with the project status.
I highly recommend AddOn as a partner for any organization planning a virtualization project."

WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG - virtualized Data Center enables high available SAP-Landscape

Management Summary
This case shows you, how Addon supports a client which was planning a change to a virtualized SAP system landscape infrastructure. The results of this project proofs, virtualization technology makes IT infrastructure easier to administer, high available and helps to reduce costs.

The Customer: WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG
(sector:engine and plant construction)
Short profile
WIFAG looks back on a more than 100 year old history. Since its foundation internationally active in graphic industry and publishing houses, WIFAG products have rapidly gained an excellent reputation. In the field of printing machine construction WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG in Bern is one of the global market leaders. WIFAG products stand for Swiss quality, efficiency, reliability, security and innovation. With the newest product generation “evolution” in digital offset newspaper printing, WIFAG is one of the leading companies worldwide.

Definition of the project
The replacement of Legacy Hardware was the initial point for thinking about a fundamental reconception of the IT landscape at WIFAG. The announcement by SAP AG in 2007 to ensure support for their solutions also on VMware Virtual Infrastructure has created new opportunities. After a detailed checkup the decision was made: the SAP system landscape will be virtualized comprehensively. Two redundant data centers should ensure the high operational ability in the future. The integration of an IBM storage solution, connected with a new LUN design, should guarantee a high system performance. Due to the special relevance of the SAP system it was very important for the IT management to collaborate during virtualization with a SAP and VMware certified partner, which has experience in comparable projects. Therefore, WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG decided to implement this SAP virtualization project together with AddOn (Schweiz) AG.

Project goals
Supreme goal of this investment was to improve capability and reliability of IT comprehensively. Therefore, the SAP systems and their interconnected databases should be converted into a virtualized infrastructure. Besides the project improvements, high operational ability, and simplification of the IT landscape, the responsible officers at WIFAG expect a noticeable cost reduction concerning investments and energy consumption.

Solutions
As a project preparation, the employees responsible for SAP at WIFAG visited the workshop AD310 „VMware Infrastructure 3.5: Install & Configure for SAP System Administration“. The acquired knowledge has built the basis for the realization of the company’s strategic decision to virtualize its SAP system landscape with VMware products. In Workshops with the customer, AddOn consultants discussed and designed the concept for a redundant data center and planned the migration of the SAP systems and the database into a virtual infrastructure. The choice of the best strategy (SAP or VMware) and the use of project-conform tools were decisive for later success. Significant for the achievement of the project was also the experience of the AddOn consultants in designing LUN for the virtual infrastructure and for the IBM SAN.

Success
The installation of a virtual infrastructure and the migration of the SAP systems into the new system world were developed in close collaboration with the customer. The SAP systems (developing, test and production system) and the database were migrated into a virtual infrastructure. Within the migration the database was reorganized. Together with the new LUN design, this leads to a considerable increase of performance. The transfer from a 32-bit into a 64-bit environment ensures the broad use of the capability of the new hardware. The virtualization and the subsequent reduction of the physical server landscape, reduced costs for electricity and data center air conditioning considerably. The redundant data center guarantees high availability for the SAP system. The whole project was terminated in time.

Customer assessment
Nurtekin Tugal, responsible for the WIFAG SAP Customer Competence Center: “We used to know AddOn from former joint SAP projects. At that time the AddOn SAP consultants gave us tremendous advice. As the current project is about the virtualization of business critical SAP applications, it was very important to have a partner that possesses the knowledge at first hand. Our choice was AddOn – it is both accredited SAP Service Partner and VMware Certified Consulting and Training Partner. Retrospectively, I can say that this consideration was fully correct.

Together with the AddOn consultants, we developed a solution which matches perfectly with our conceptions and the aim of the company. We could implement the project fast and on schedule. The cooperation was exactly as expected: open, efficient and customer-oriented. The professional work of the consultants was excellent.

Another plus was the direct and open communication and the broad knowledge transfer within the project. We reached our project goals to the full extent. With our redundant data center the applications are highly available now, performance is very good (not least because of the successful LUN design), and with the new virtualized infrastructure we did a step forward towards “Green IT”. We are very satisfied with this solution. Our courage to virtualize the SAP production system was worhtwhile. From the beginning, the application has been running robustly and with a good performance in the virtualized environment.”

“I highly recommend AddOn as a partner for any organization planning a virtualization project of the SAP landscape.”
